An excerpt : Vander Zalm became embroiled in an alleged conflict of interest controversy over the sale of his Fantasy Gardens flower garden and theme park. The conflict of interest arose because the Taiwanese buyer, Tan Yu, was provided VIP treatment by members of the Vander Zalm Government prior to the sale.
Adding fuel to the fire, Faye Leung, a Chinese-Canadian entrepreneur and the woman who brokered the deal, claimed that Vander Zalm was a "bad man" since the day she first met him and secretly recorded conversations she had with him, which were subsequently leaked to the media.
For her part in the affair, Leung would later be convicted of four counts of secret commissions over 100k, and one count of theft over 45k, and two counts of fraud in 1995 by the BC Court of Appeals.

Key details of the case include:
- The Verdict: On February 9, 2012, a B.C. Supreme Court jury found Vander Zalm guilty of libeling Hughes in eight of eleven specific passages within his 2008 autobiography, Bill Vander Zalm: For the People.
- Damages: The jury recommended, and the court later ordered, that Vander Zalm pay Hughes $60,000 in compensatory damages.
- The Defamatory Claims: In his book, Vander Zalm suggested that Hughes was self-interested, biased, and politically motivated during his 1991 inquiry into the sale of Vander Zalm’s Fantasy Gardens theme park. That 1991 inquiry had concluded Vander Zalm breached conflict-of-interest guidelines, leading to his immediate resignation as premier.
- Court Orders: Following the verdict, Justice Laura Gerow issued an injunction requiring Vander Zalm to stop selling copies of the book containing the defamatory passages. However, the judge ruled that Vander Zalm would not be required to publish a public apology in major newspapers, as Hughes had requested.
- Legal Costs: While Vander Zalm was ordered to pay Hughes' regular legal costs, the court rejected a request for "double costs" that would have penalized him for rejecting a pre-trial settlement offer.
Vander Zalm later filed a petition in August 2012 seeking to have his insurance provider, Lloyd's Underwriters, cover the $60,000 judgment under his personal liability policy.
