An excerpt:  'Theories' ...   Edward Bernays is often mentioned as the father of modern propaganda 26 or, more precisely, of institutional political propaganda and the public relations industry 27 , 22 , and therefore as the father of spin 28 , in other words of the manipulation of opinion 29 .

He was one of the first to industrialize n 2 the psychology of the subconscious to “persuade” public opinion in spite of itself. He developed his own theories, probably by combining the ideas of Gustave Le Bon on crowd psychology , those of Wilfred Trotter on social psychology , and those of Freud on psychoanalysis , although, according to clinical psychologist Sandrine Aumercier, Bernays " admitted to knowing nothing about psychoanalysis" but nevertheless promoted his link with Freud "personally and stubbornly" to the point of "giving rise to the dissemination of distressing amalgamations" 8 such as that of an article in the Atlantic Monthly published in 1932:

“Unlike his distinguished uncle [Freud], he [Bernays] is not known as a practitioner of psychoanalysis, but he is a psychoanalyst in exactly the same way, because he works with the science of unconscious mental processes. Its business is to treat unconscious mental acts with conscious acts. The famous Viennese doctor is involved in the treatment of individual libido; his American nephew is engaged in processing (and directing) the repressed desires of the crowd 28 , 8 . »

For him, a crowd cannot be considered as thinking, only the id is expressed there, that is to say the unconscious impulses . It is aimed there to better sell products through advertising targeted on emotions.

In politics, he “sells” the image of public figures, for example by creating the president's breakfast, where he meets show-biz personalities . He considers that an intelligent minority must have “democratic” power and that the popular mass must be molded to accept it 31 , 32 , 33 .

In her work Les arrogants , Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor quotes him, when he himself speaks of “organizing chaos” 34  :

“The conscious, intelligent manipulation of the opinions and organized habits of the masses plays an important role in a democratic society. Those who manipulate this imperceptible social mechanism form an invisible government that truly runs the country. »

— E. Bernays, Propaganda , p.  18

For Edward Bernays in fact:

“Propaganda is the executive arm of the invisible government”

— E. Bernays, Propaganda , p.  18

Lyrics:

When I was a young man I carried my packAnd I lived the free life of a roverFrom the murrays green basin to the dusty outbackI waltzed my matilda all overThen in nineteen fifteen my country said sonIt's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to beDoneSo they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gunAnd they sent me away to the warAnd the band played Waltzing MatildaAs we sailed away from the quayAnd amidst all the tears and the shouts and theCheersWe sailed off to Gallipoli
How well I remember that terrible dayWhen the blood stained the sand and the waterAnd how in that hell that they called suvla bayWe were butchered like lambs at the slaughterJohnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself wellHe showered us with bullets, he rained us withShellsAnd in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hellNearly blew us right back to AustraliaBut the band played waltzing MatildaAs we stopped to bury our slainAnd we buried ours and the Turks buried theirsThen it started all over again
Now those who were living did their best to surviveIn that mad world of blood, death and fireAnd for seven long weeks I kept myself aliveWhile the corpses around me piled higherThen a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over titAnd when I woke up in my hospital bedAnd saw what it had done, Christ I wished I wasDeadNever knew there were worse things than dyingAnd no more I'll go waltzing MatildaTo the green bushes so far and nearFor to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legsNo more waltzing Matilda for me
So they collected the cripples, the wounded andMaimedAnd they shipped us back home to AustraliaThe legless, the armless, the blind and insaneThose proud wounded heroes of suvlaAnd as our ship pulled into circular quayI looked at the place where me legs used to beAnd thank Christ there was nobody waiting for meTo grieve and to mourn and to pityAnd the band played Waltzing MatildaAs they carried us down the gangwayBut nobody cheered, they just stood and staredAnd they turned all their faces away
And now every April I sit on my porchAnd I watch the parade pass before meI see my old comrades, how proudly they marchReliving their dreams of past gloryI see the old men, all twisted and tornThe forgotten heroes of a forgotten warAnd the young people ask me, "what are theyMarching for?"And I ask myself the same questionAnd the band plays Waltzing MatildaAnd the old men still answer to the callBut year after year their numbers get fewerSome day no one will march there at all
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing MatildaWho'll go a-Waltzing Matilda with me?
